Zephyr, The Flight Mechanics Laboratory
Zephyr started as a spin-off of the University of Bologna, bringing to professional level a wealth of experience and knowledge dating back to 2006, when the Flight Mechanics Laboratory became a reference point for high automation aircraft. At a time when the word ‘drone’ was still unknown to many, Zephyr’s team of professors and researchers were already developing aerial systems and ground stations for scientific institutes and research institutions. Among the reasons for pride we can mention the successful collaboration with INGV, the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, with which we have taken pioneering steps in the field of aerial monitoring of volcanic phenomena and magnetic anomalies on the Antarctic continent.
Drones
Drones for professional use, also known as RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems), are aircraft with no pilot on board, controlled by a ground station, that can conduct highly automated missions. Created several years ago for military applications, they are also gaining ground in the civil sector, combining dynamic modelling with new professional applications. One of the most promising applications is the making of photos and videos from unusual observation points for various purposes ranging from photogrammetry through precision agriculture, to video recording of events or cultural promotion.
